The EPFO portal has recently undergone a significant transformation, offering salaried employees a streamlined process to transfer their EPF balance from previous employers to their current accounts. This new feature aims to simplify the transfer process, reduce paperwork, and consolidate retirement savings, all while minimizing procedural delays. The portal's recent upgrade, which included a major database consolidation and software update, caused a temporary downtime, but services are now operational, albeit with some potential delays in PF claims and service requests.
The transfer process is straightforward and user-friendly. Salaried employees can initiate the transfer request through two methods: the 'Request for Transfer of Account' section or the 'Member Service History' section. The first option is available under the 'Online Services' tab, allowing for a seamless transfer process. The second method involves viewing past and current employment details, pending EPF transfer claims, and making the 'Service Transfer Claim' through Form 13. It's important to note that employees must log in to the EPFO member portal using their Universal Account Number (UAN) to access these services.
The transfer process involves a few simple steps. Employees enter their previous employer's Member ID and other required details, then click 'Get Details'. An OTP is sent to their Aadhaar-linked mobile number for verification and submission. The portal then displays the details of the present establishment into which the transfer will be affected, ensuring a smooth transition. Once submitted, EPFO processes the transfer, moving the balance to the current EPF account.
EPF, or the Employees' Provident Fund, is a government-backed savings scheme designed to provide financial security to salaried employees post-retirement. Both the employee and employer contribute 12% of the employee's basic salary and dearness allowances towards EPF, with a cap of ₹1,800 for each party. The EPF interest rate for FY 2025-26 is 8.25% per annum, reviewed and calculated monthly but credited annually. EPF account transfer is crucial for salaried employees as it increases their total service history, leading to higher payouts, avoids TDS on final settlement, enhances pension eligibility, and provides better insurance coverage.
However, the EPFO portal upgrade may cause delays in the transfer process, as it takes time to normalize. This is a temporary inconvenience, and the EPFO is working to restore full services. Despite this, the new transfer process is a significant improvement, offering a more efficient and user-friendly experience for salaried employees, ensuring their retirement savings are secure and accessible.
