The numbers speak for themselves: 133 cases in the NT, 79 in WA, 6 in SA, and up to 5 in Queensland. Federal Health Minister Mark Butler describes it as "probably the biggest diphtheria outbreak we've seen in decades."
One of the key concerns is the impact on Indigenous communities. Almost all of the cases are affecting Indigenous Australians, according to Mr. Butler, who met with Aboriginal medical services in Alice Springs. This highlights the need for targeted efforts to reach and protect these communities.
The Booster Challenge

The outbreak has reached remote communities across the Northern Territory, and Dr. Boffa emphasizes that the more we look, the more cases we find. This underscores the importance of swift action and widespread testing and vaccination efforts, especially in these hard-to-reach areas.

There's also a suspected diphtheria-related death, which, while not yet officially confirmed, has a 95% certainty of being linked to the illness. Dr. Boffa argues that in the midst of a communicable disease outbreak, it's crucial to communicate the potential life-threatening nature of the disease effectively and promptly. This includes sharing information about the cause of death to encourage vaccination and raise awareness.
